Metastatic Breast Cancer - COUNT ME(ts) IN
The tremendous challenge people with Stage 4 cancer face, is that this is the ONLY kind of cancer that kills. If breast cancer remains in the breast – it is controllable. Once it leaves the breast for the bones, liver, brain, and/or lungs and becomes metastatic (Stage 4) – it is deadly. Unfortunately very little of all breast cancer funds are directed to research that will focus on how to stop that metastasized cancer from invading to the point of death.
The median life expectancy of someone with Stage 4 Breast Cancer is 3 years – typically 3 years filled with harsh medical treatments and less than optimal quality of life. 108 people in the US alone die EVERY DAY – picture a 26 row 3X2 aisle jet liner – and the numbers have NOT improved in 30 years because of a lack of investment in research for a true CURE. More women are being caught early due to increased surveillance – but that has only increased the denominator. Those of us in the numerator are continuing to die, including so many young women and loving mothers that I have come to know through our Regina support group Inpower.
A sub-group of women from Inpower in Regina have put together a team for the Run for The Cure this year and 100% of our funds will be directed to saving lives through Metastatic Research. In 2016 & 2017 “Mets” teams were in place in Calgary, Ottawa and other cities in Canada. Now with the merger of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Foundation of Canada – we are set to completely blow their numbers out of the water and raise $30,000 with the only intent to save lives of people who currently live with the only truly deadly form of breast cancer.
