Metastatic Needs More (aka Team MnM)

Many thanks for visiting our team page. Be sure to visit the personal pages of our team members to learn more about each one of these amazing people!

Team MnM was created to support a legacy of love, action and hope.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Needs More ...

... ATTENTION - The Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) community is under-represented in the larger breast cancer community. Dismal survival statistics detract from the positive spin often told with the breast cancer story. However, with more and more advocates leading the charge, there is hope on the horizon.

... FUNDING - People living with MBC need investment in treatment options and timely access to promising research. Statistics for MBC are discouraging despite overall gains in cancer management. After decades of 'awareness' and fundraising campaigns, a 22% chance of surviving 5 years post diagnosis should not be the norm.

... UNDERSTANDING - An estimated 30% of people diagnosed with an early stage breast cancer will go on to develop metastatic disease. Helping MBC patients helps people diagnosed at all stages by lessening fears associated with recurrence and spread. Imagine doing 'everything' you are told to do by way of treatment, only to be aware these efforts don't guarantee a cure. Should the cancer return and spread, you are suddenly 'incurable'. It is a fear that many people must manage with every new symptom and feeling post diagnosis.

The Canadian Cancer Society makes information available related to funding allocations for metastatic research; while a review of previous years' data is promising, there is much work still to be done.

Thank you for supporting the participants of Team MnM.

With love and gratitude,

Vesna Zic-Côté, Team Captain
